The Experience
This tour allows you to discover and enjoy two of the most beautiful small medieval towns with Etruscan origins immersed in the greenery of a wonderful countryside rich in history and tradition.
Your private driver will take you to discover Civita di Bagnoregio, the dying town. Built on a hill of tufa stone, the town has suffered severe erosion from earthquakes for centuries, forcing its inhabitants to abandon it. The town is now almost uninhabited but still retains a fairytale medieval charm.
Civita can be reached by a single cement road. Once you cross the threshold of the ancient gates of S. Maria or del Cassero, you are plunged into a world between history and magic, past and present: old houses, souvenir shops, and views over the whole valley. It is well worth a visit, and you will feel as if you are floating in space and time.
After a short 30-minute drive we reach Orvieto. As well as its panoramic views, the city is famous for its fascinating underground passages. A tour with an official English-speaking guide will take you to discover the network of underground tunnels created by the ancient inhabitants over some 3000 years of continuous excavation. It is an extraordinary journey into the past, an exciting itinerary that takes you to the deep roots of the city.
For lunch, you can choose between a typical restaurant in the caves or one of the city’s wine cellars to taste one of Italy’s most famous white wines and local ham, salami, and cheese. Before returning, you can stroll through the picturesque streets, and visit the cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and, if time allows, St Patrick’s Well, a 15hds masterpiece of hydraulic engineering!
We suggest wearing comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing to visit the churches, monuments and museums
